Backyard campout: Your DIY family camping guide

Booking a campsite online in Alberta isn’t always for the faint of heart, but you don’t necessarily have to pack up and leave town to indulge in some good old-fashioned camping. In fact, enjoying a backyard family campout can be so much fun, and is as easy as 1-2-3!

Reasons to camp in your backyard?

  • \n
  • Test old and/or new equipment before going to a campground.
  • \n
  • Sleeping in a tent in your yard makes for an awesome sleepover or overnight birthday party.

CAMPFIRE FOOD

\n

After the tent is erected and beds have been laid out, prepare some delicious food – something most campers say is the highlight of camping! Uncomplicated recipes suitable for a fire pit, grill or camp stove are usually best if you have young children and also make for a painless clean-up later on.

\n

Campfire Nachos. Using a cast-iron skillet, start with a layer of nacho chips on the bottom. Next, sprinkle on shredded Tex-Mex cheese, black olives, tomatoes and green onions. Add another layer of chips and shredded cheese. For the final layer add more chips, shredded cheese, black olives, tomatoes and green onions. For a spicy kick, top with jalapeño peppers. Cover the top of the skillet with aluminum foil and cook over the fire or grill on medium heat until the cheese is melted, about ten to 15 minutes. You can also add pre-cooked and taco-seasoned ground beef, ground chicken, or black beans for added protein.

\n

After everyone has devoured their camping supper, it’s time for dessert! Roasting marshmallows and making s’mores might be Camping 101, but why not put a twist on these classics and build the ultimate s’more? The equation is simple: base + toasted marshmallow + toppings = your perfectly personalized s’more. Set up a Make-Your-Own-S’more Bar with some tempting ingredients.

\n

Start with the base: Graham crackers, Ritz crackers, waffle cookies, stroopwafel cookies, Oreo cookies, chocolate chip cookies, shortbread cookies, etc.

\n

Then, lay out toppings in similar groupings:

\n
    \n
  • Salted or unsalted caramel sauce, Nutella, jam (raspberry, strawberry or cherry), and peanut or almond butter
  • \n
  • Milk and dark chocolate, milk and/or dark chocolate sea salt caramel, white chocolate, chocolate chips, chocolate-covered pretzels, and chocolate bars such as Milky Way, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, York Peppermint Patties, KitKat, or Rolos.
  • \n
  • Slice up strawberries and bananas, or have other fruit on hand such as raspberries or blueberries.
  • \n
\n

And, of course, don’t forget the marshmallows, whether plain or specialty-made ones like toasted coconut marshmallows.

\n

Try out these irresistible Graham-cracker-base combinations:

\n
    \n
  • Graham crackers + toasted marshmallow + chocolate-covered pretzels
  • \n
  • Graham crackers + toasted marshmallow + dark chocolate + sliced strawberry
  • \n
  • Graham crackers + toasted marshmallow + milk chocolate + raspberry jam + raspberries
  • \n
  • Graham crackers + toasted marshmallow + milk chocolate + fruit jam + peanut butter
  • \n
  • Graham crackers + toasted marshmallow + milk chocolate + peanut butter + sliced banana
  • \n
  • Graham cracker + toasted coconut marshmallow + caramel sauce
  • \n
\n

Or, try something new!

\n
    \n
  • Stroopwafel cookies + toasted marshmallow + dark or milk chocolate + peanut butter
  • \n
  • Stroopwafel cookies + toasted marshmallow + milk chocolate sea salt caramel + caramel sauce
  • \n
  • Shortbread cookies + toasted marshmallow + macerated strawberries + white chocolate
  • \n
  • Oreo cookies + toasted marshmallow + milk chocolate
  • \n
  • Ritz crackers + toasted marshmallow + chocolate of your choice
  • \n
\n

If (gasp!) no one in your family wants to make traditional s’mores, or you just want an easier option, throw together a simple and quick s'mores snack mix with chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, and Golden Grahams or Cinnamon Chex.

GAMES

\n

Camping isn’t only about eating and sleeping! Family game time is a quintessential memory-making part, too. There’s oodles of creative and interactive games out there, but some work better in a backyard camping environment than others.

\n
    \n
  • Would You Rather: Take turns coming up with questions – the more creative, the better! Example: Would you rather camp on the top of a snowy mountain or in the desert next to a pyramid?
  • \n
  • Alphabet Lists: Choose a topic (such as movies, places, or animals) and move through the alphabet from A to Z. For example, A is for alligator, B is for bear – and so on and so forth.
  • \n
  • Charades: Try charades with a camping twist! Some prompts include: coyote howling, roasting marshmallows, making a s’more, setting up a tent, spraying mosquito spray, chopping wood, or
  • \n
  • making a fire.
  • \n
  • Card games: Spoons, Blitz, Go Fish, Rummy, Crazy Eights, Uno, Skip BO, Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza, Exploding Kittens, Rat-A-Tat-Cat Game, Sleeping Queens, or Monopoly Deal.
  • \n
  • Dice games: Yahtzee, Qwixx, or Farkle.
  • \n
  • Minute to Win It games: Face the Cookie/Cookie Face, Junk in the Trunk, Backward ABCs, Suck it Up, or Post-It Note Cover Up.
  • \n
  • Pictionary: Pick a theme and start drawing! Some popular ones include food and drink, animals, animated movies, sports, things in the sky, or things in the backyard.
  • \n
  • Lawn games: Bocce, Kubb, horseshoes, cornhole, lawn darts, ladder golf, or croquet.
  • \n
\n

With full, happy bellies and faces aching from smiling after gametime, gather around the campfire for some family storytelling before bedtime. Create a story together, or just reminisce about past family adventures. These are the moments we don’t soon forget, and a backyard campout is a fantastic way to strengthen family bonds and create lasting memories.
