Bring spring indoors: Fun garden party ideas for kids

When winter drags on, an indoor garden party is the perfect way to lift spirits and get kids off their electronics. Hosting a garden party at home allows children to experience the joy of nature, get their hands dirty, and learn about plants while having fun. Whether for a birthday, sleepover, or just because, you can easily bring the feeling of spring indoors and enjoy nature together.

\n

Here are three fun activities that will keep kids entertained and foster a love for the outdoors – all from the kitchen table.

\n \n

Mini gardens or special plant buddies. Set up a station where kids can decorate pots before planting flower seeds or indoor plants that thrive in Calgary’s challenging climate. Flowers like sunflowers, marigolds, zinnias, and pansies germinate quickly indoors and can be moved outside after the May long weekend. For a quicker, more instant-gratification project, spider plants and pothos are perfect indoor plants that grow fast and are easy to care for.

\n

Let the kids’ creativity shine as they decorate the pots. Water-based paints, permanent markers, stickers, glitter glue, buttons, and rhinestones are great options for personalizing planters. You can easily find supplies at stores like Dollarama or Michaels.

\n

Supply List:

\n
    \n
  • Terracotta, plastic, or ceramic pots (3-6in in diameter)
  • \n
  • Paints, markers, stickers, rhinestones, glitter glue, buttons, etc.
  • \n
  • Potting soil or seed-starting mix
  • \n
  • Flower seed packets or young plants
  • \n
  • Spray bottles or mini watering cans
  • \n
\n

This hands-on activity not only sparks artistic expression, but also teaches kids patience, empathy, and the importance of tending to living things.

\n

Terrariums. Terrariums are compact, portable, and low-maintenance ecosystems! Kids will enjoy layering textures and creating their own miniature worlds in small fish bowls, jars, or glass vases. This activity is a fun way to experiment with creating a sustainable environment while learning about the balance needed to grow plants.

\n

When selecting plants, go for varieties with similar growing needs. Two popular categories include:

\n
    \n
  • Succulents: Aloe Vera, Echeveria, Jade, Hens and Chicks, and Sedum require bright, indirect light and minimal water.
  • \n
  • Cacti: Bunny Ear, Golden Barrel, Barrel, and Star cactuses are all great options requiring plenty of sunlight and occasional watering.
  • \n
\n

Supply List:

\n
    \n
  • Clear glass containers (jars, fish bowls, small vases)
  • \n
  • Small succulents or cacti
  • \n
  • Potting soil
  • \n
  • Decorative pebbles, sand, or moss
  • \n
  • Mini figurines for added interest
  • \n

  • \n
\n

Terrariums are easy to maintain and provide a rewarding experience as kids watch their tiny ecosystems thrive. Plus, they make a lovely centrepiece for the home, and kids will enjoy caring for them after the party. Don’t forget to remind kids to place their new terrarium in bright light and water sparingly.

\n

Floral crowns and garlands. Using fresh, faux, or paper flowers, kids can create wearable floral art to take home as keepsakes. Younger children can thread flowers onto ribbons to make simple garlands, while older kids can use floral wire and tape to craft intricate crowns. Floral crowns have become a trendy accessory at parties and make perfect souvenirs for any event.

\n

If using fresh flowers, opt for varieties that last longer and dry nicely, such as roses, carnations, or chrysanthemums. Alternatively, faux or paper flowers will allow the creations to last for a much longer time.

\n

Supply List:

\n
    \n
  • Fresh flowers (e.g., roses, baby’s breath, daisies, or carnations) with greenery like eucalyptus, ivy, or boxwood
  • \n
  • Faux flowers from craft stores like Michaels or Dollarama
  • \n
  • Paper flowers (pre-made or DIY using construction paper)
  • \n
  • Floral wire and floral tape
  • \n
  • Ribbon or twine
  • \n
  • Scissors or snips
  • \n

With their newfound floral masterpieces, kids will not only walk away with a beautiful accessory but also a sense of pride in their creativity and memories of a hands-on, blooming adventure!
